The Congress on Tuesday took down a controversial headless poster targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi from its official X handle, following an “internal row” within the party.
The move came shortly after the BJP slammed Congress for the post, accusing it of echoing Pakistan’s narrative in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 dead.
According to sources, Congress social media head Supriya Shrinate was asked to delete the post and was pulled up by the leadership for allowing content that deviated from the party line.
The top leadership of the Congress party expressed strong displeasure with the media department, with concerns that the post had put the party on the back foot and projected it in a negative light, sources said.
The Congress took a swipe at PM Modi with a headless poster highlighting his absence from the all-party meeting over the Pahalgam terror attack. The party posted an image with the word ‘gayab’ to question the Prime Minister’s absence.
While the post did not name PM Modi directly, the caption read, “Disappears at the time of responsibility,” in a clear reference to his non-attendance. Congress has repeatedly raised questions over the Prime Minister skipping the meeting convened to brief leaders on the attack.
Reacting strongly, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia, at a press conference on Tuesday, showed the Congress post and lashed out at the party. He said it wouldn’t be wrong to describe the Congress as “Lashkar-e-Pakistan Congress,” claiming the post was disgraceful and aligned with enemy narratives.
Bhatia alleged that the Congress had become a platform for “Mir Jafar’s supporters” and that such posts, in his view, were made at the behest of Rahul Gandhi, bringing shame to the nation. He further accused the Congress of trying to weaken the country during a sensitive time, adding that the party’s ideology resembled that of extremist groups.
