CNG Nears Rs 87/Kg In Delhi: Congress Blames ‘Inflation Man’ Modi For Nearly 100% Rise In 6 Years

  • August 29, 2026

Delhi CNG prices have risen by Rs 3.89 per kg amid surging global LNG costs. Congress called PM Modi ‘Inflation Man’, saying CNG prices have nearly doubled over six years.

Delhi CNG Price Hike: Congress Targets PM Modi, Says Fuel Nearly Doubled In 6 Years

CNG prices in Delhi have gone up by Rs 3.89 per kg, with the new rate of Rs 86.98 per kg coming into effect from 6 am on Saturday, August 29. The hike has drawn a sharp political reaction from the Congress, which accused the Modi government of adding to the burden on consumers.

Taking aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress in a post on X said, “‘Inflation Man’ Modi’s stick has struck again – CNG has become Rs 3.89 more expensive. Over the past 6 years, CNG prices have risen by nearly 99%, meaning they’ve doubled.”

The post highlighted that the CNG price in August 2020 was at Rs 43.80, whereas in August 2026 it has reached Rs 86.98, almost doubling in six years.

“‘Inflation Man’ Modi has made CNG nearly Rs 43 more expensive in 6 years,” the post said.

— Congress (@INCIndia) August 29, 2026

The Congress’s attack came hours after Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) announced the price revision late Friday night.

Why Has CNG Become More Expensive?

IGL said the hike was necessary because of a sharp rise in the cost of imported natural gas.

In a statement, the company said that despite soaring imported spot gas prices, corporate department entities such as IGL have been maintaining competitive CNG prices compared with alternative fuels to support the continued growth of CNG consumption in India.

A significant portion of the gas used as an input for CNG in India is sourced through imported LNG. According to IGL, international spot LNG prices have risen sharply since the beginning of the West Asia conflict.

Strait Of Hormuz Crisis Pushes Up LNG Prices

IGL said the re-escalation of the West Asia crisis since July 2026 has affected LNG cargo movements through the Strait of Hormuz, pushing global LNG prices to nearly double their pre-crisis levels.

The company also pointed to rising demand in Europe to build natural gas stocks ahead of the winter season.

At the same time, IGL said CNG consumption in India has increased significantly, in line with economic growth and rising consumer demand. These factors, it said, have pushed up the cost of gas used for the CNG segment.

“With international LNG prices remaining elevated and the cost impact becoming increasingly significant, a calibrated revision of Rs 3.89 per kg has now become necessary to partially offset the increase in input gas cost,” IGL said.

The company added that the revised prices would come into effect from 6 am on Saturday.

How Much Have CNG And LNG Prices Risen?

IGL said Delhi’s retail CNG price had gradually increased from Rs 77.09 per kg to Rs 83.09 per kg, representing an increase of around 7.8%.

In comparison, international gas benchmarks have recorded significantly sharper increases.

The Europe TTF gas benchmark rose from around $11.36/MMBTU to nearly $23.35/MMBTU, an increase of approximately 105%.

The Asia JKM LNG benchmark climbed from around $10.99/MMBTU to $23.41/MMBTU, marking an increase of approximately 113%.
