“Blood On My Hands”: Nicole Noren Reveals Why She Walked Away From ESPN After 24 Years

  • October 15, 2026

Former ESPN producer Nicole Noren reveals why the network’s growing involvement in sports betting pushed her to leave after 24 years. Her family’s painful history with gambling addiction played a major role in her decision.

Nicole Noren has been working at ESPN for 24 years, developing her career in the realm of investigative journalism and documentary film making. However, as ESPN was expanding its scope of activities to include sports betting, Noren found herself facing not only a difficult dilemma in relation to her career but also a personal one. Having experienced the tragic consequences of her family members’ gambling problems for many years, Nicole finally made a decision to leave ESPN in July 2024. On October 14, 2026, she made her motives public.

Nicole Noren’s Family History Made ESPN’s Sports Betting Move Difficult To Accept

“I was out,” Noren told Columbia Journalism Review. “I’m not going to work for a gambling company and have blood on my hands.”

Her concerns were based on her personal experience. Noren explained that her grandfather, father, and one of her brothers became victims of sports gambling addiction. They were having financial difficulties and they had even to relocate due to financial issues.

Her brother passed away in Las Vegas at the age of 36 being homeless. Noren explained that she was taken by her family to sportsbooks as a child while her father gambled.

Her personal experience impacted her perception of ESPN’s increased engagement in betting. Also, she believed that the barrier between business interests and journalism weakened during the time.

According to Noren, she had submitted stories about gambling firms and addiction but these projects did not get approval as she had expected. Also, one program on the topic was not as critical as some individuals involved expected.

ESPN’s Sports Betting Approach Changed After It Partnered With Penn Entertainment

The transition of ESPN into sports betting grew more pronounced in August 2023 when ESPN signed a 10-year, $1.5 billion contract with Penn Entertainment, with ESPN BET debuting in November of that year, putting the ESPN’s name on its sportsbook.

The agreement would eventually fall through, with the dissolution going into effect on December 1, 2025, as ESPN began its multi-year deal with DraftKings, which went into effect on the same date.
