Australia hit an all-time low after failing to qualify for the Super Eight stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The 2021 champions lost to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in the group stage. The Men in Yellow’s exit is an unprecedented moment in cricket history.

The Australian cricket team has sunk to an embarrassing low after they were knocked out of the 2026 T20 World Cup as the game between Zimbabwe and Ireland at the Pallekele International Stadium on Tuesday (February 17), which ensured that the two teams shared points. This means that the Sikandar Raza-led team has sealed their spot in the Super eight spot of the tournament, which means that neither Australia nor Ireland were knocked out of the tournament, while Sri Lanka had already qualified for the second round.
The 2021 champions came into the tournament as pre-tournament favourites alongside India and South Africa, but have had a campaign to forget, which was troubled with several injuries. Australia were beaten by Zimbabwe in their second game of the tournament by 23 runs before losing by seven wickets to co-hosts Sri Lanka yesterday.
Australia Hit All-Time Low
The result means that Australia has missed out on making the semi-finals (SF) for the third time in a row. After winning the title in 2021, they were knocked out in the Super 12 stage in the 2022 edition at home as a solitary defeat in their tournament opener to New Zealand proved costly. Later, their campaign ended in the Super Eight stage in 2024 after a first-ever defeat against Afghanistan, as well as a loss to eventual champions India.
This marks the first time since the first-ever men’s senior ICC tournament was played 51 years ago (1975 World Cup) that Australia have failed to make the SF of an event for three consecutive occasions. It is the sixth time in 10 editions that the cricketing giants have not made the last four of the T20 World Cup.
This is only the second time Australia has failed to reach a Super 6/8/12 or Quarter-final of an ICC event, alongside the 2009 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, when they were knocked out in the group stage after losing both their games against Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
While the Men in Yellow crashed out in the first round of the Cricket World Cup in 1979, 1983, and 1992, there was neither a Super 6/8/12 that year nor a quarter-finals and team directly qualified for the semi-finals from the group stage in those tournaments. Similarly, top-ranked teams in the T20 World Cups of 2016 and 2022 were given a bye to the Super 12 phase, and hence, they did not feature in the group stage.
