A scuffle broke out at the Delhi residence of Independent MP Pappu Yadav on Sunday while he was addressing a press conference, with the MP later alleging that the incident was part of an attempt to assassinate him.
According to reports, a group of individuals allegedly confronted Yadav during the media interaction, triggering a clash with his supporters. The confrontation comes amid the controversy surrounding the Opposition’s Ram Mandir skit performed inside the Parliament complex earlier this week.
Following the incident, Pappu Yadav and his supporters claimed that the two men were carrying a knife. Visuals circulating on social media showed a knife placed on a table after the incident.
Speaking to reporters after the incident, Yadav claimed there had been a conspiracy to kill him and alleged that a reward had been announced against him.
“Babas are saying every day, ‘Kill me, burn me down; we will give Rs 51 lakh.’We caught him and handed him over to the police. There was a plot to kill me, but I survived,” Yadav said.
He also alleged that one of the men involved in the confrontation was carrying a knife.
“I came here because last night, they went to my children’s home. Now, you are trying to intimidate my children too; that won’t happen. I was with the press, and a conversation was underway. Amid that, there was an attempt to kill me,” said Yadav.
Accused Identified
Delhi Police sources have identified the main accused in the scuffle at Independent MP Pappu Yadav’s Delhi residence as Sumit, a 34-year-old iron trader from Ghaziabad who is originally from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. According to the sources, no previous criminal record has been found against him so far.
The second individual involved has been identified as Happy, who was allegedly waiting inside a Creta car parked outside Yadav’s residence when Sumit allegedly threw a shoe at the MP during the press conference. During interrogation, the two men reportedly told police that they had travelled from Bulandshahr to Delhi on Sunday to get their vehicle repaired. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
Ram Mandir Skit Sparks Controversy
The incident comes days after Opposition MPs staged a satirical skit inside the Parliament complex on July 31, using symbolic characters to raise allegations over donations collected for the Ram Mandir.
During the performance, Pappu Yadav wore saffron robes and portrayed a temple priest, while other Opposition MPs enacted scenes involving a donation box and allegations of corruption.
Police Complaints And Protests
The skit drew strong criticism from the BJP. Party leaders, including Bansuri Swaraj, along with several BJP MLAs, filed police complaints in New Delhi, alleging that the performance had hurt religious sentiments.
