Pakistan is moving towards a larger military role in the Middle East and South Asia as Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia prepare for key defence discussions in Istanbul.

Field Marshal Asim Munir has arrived in Turkey ahead of the first committee meeting under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, which is scheduled for Monday. The meeting will focus on joint defence cooperation between the three countries.

Asim Munir In Istanbul For Trilateral Talks

Munir’s arrival in Istanbul comes ahead of a high-level meeting involving Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

The first committee meeting under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement is set to bring the three countries together for technical and operational discussions. The talks are expected to place trilateral defence cooperation at the centre of the partnership.

The Istanbul meeting follows the formalisation of what is being described as a historic defence triad involving Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

The three countries are set to discuss joint defence cooperation as they seek to strengthen military links under the agreement.

Pakistan’s New Defence Position

According to top intelligence sources, Pakistan is shifting away from traditional defence postures and positioning itself as a core military pillar across the Middle East and South Asia.

The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement has brought Pakistan’s armed forces into a framework with Turkey, which has NATO’s second-largest military, and Saudi Arabia, described as the Gulf’s premier economic powerhouse.

The agreement also includes a collective defence clause under which an attack on one country is treated as an attack on all three.

This provision marks a different phase for Pakistan, according to the intelligence sources, as Islamabad seeks a more prominent role in regional security.

Turkey, Saudi Arabia And Pakistan’s Military Triangle

The emerging partnership combines different strengths of the three countries.

Turkey brings defence technology, while Saudi Arabia provides financial backing and Pakistan contributes military power. The arrangement is aimed at establishing a strong foothold for each country in the territories of the others.

The partnership therefore extends beyond political cooperation and focuses on building deeper military and strategic links between the three nations.

The Istanbul meeting is expected to provide a platform for discussions on the technical and operational aspects of this cooperation.
