Amid tensions with Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam Attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asserted that India’s rivers will now only flow for the nation’s benefit. PM Modi indirectly mentioned the debate over the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and said that earlier, even water which was India’s right, was flowing out of the country.
“Today, there is a lot of discussion in the media on water. First, even the water that was India’s right was flowing out of the country, but now India’s water will flow for its own benefit, it will stop for India’s benefit and will be of use only to India,” PM Modi said, at ABP’s ‘India at 2047’ Summit. (“Pehle Bharat ke haq ka paani bhi baahar ja raha tha. Par ab Bharat ka paani, Bharat ke haq mein bahega, Bharat ke haq mein rukega or bharat ke hi kaam aayega.”)

India-Pakistan tensions escalate after Pahalgam attack

PM Modi’s big statement comes at a time when tensions are rising between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. Twenty-six civilians, mostly tourists, were killed on April 22 after terrorists opened fire at Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley.
Citing cross-border linkages to the horrific attack, India has promised to severely punish those involved and taken a raft of punitive measures against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, shutting down of the Attari land-transit, cancellation of visas, as well as the closing of airspace for Pakistani aircraft.
The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty has been described as an “act of war” by Pakistan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also granted the Armed Forces “complete operational freedom” to decide the mode, target, and timing of their response to the Pahalgam attack. The message was delivered as the Prime Minister chaired a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence.
