100 flights delayed, 4 dead due to strong winds as heavy rain batters Delhi-NCR

  • May 2, 2025

Delhi-NCR was hit by heavy rainfall coupled with severe thunderstorms and gusty winds early on Friday. An orange alert is in place in the national capital, with flights being delayed due to the inclement weather conditions.

Heavy rain began in Delhi-NCR since last night and a red alert is in place in the national capital.

Heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hail, lashed Delhi and its adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) early Friday morning, leading to widespread disruption. Over 40 flights were diverted and nearly 100 delayed as the weather wreaked havoc across the capital, according to airport authorities.

Tragedy struck in Dwarka’s Jaffarpur Kalan, where strong winds caused a neem tree to fall on a tube well room in Khadkhadi Nahar village. The collapse of the structure led to the deaths of a 26-year-old woman, Jyoti, and her three children. Despite rescue efforts by the police and fire brigade, all four were declared dead at RTR Hospital. Ajay, the husband of the deceased and the owner of the property, sustained minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi on Friday morning, warning of severe thunderstorms and squally winds reaching 70-80 kmph. However, by late morning, this was downgraded to an orange alert.

The intense weather event was marked by rapid temperature drops and high wind speeds across various parts of the city. At Safdarjung, wind gusts touched 80 kmph at 5.10 am, while Palam reported 74 kmph at 5.19 am. Other significant readings included:

  • Pragati Maidan: 78 kmph
  • Jaffarpura: 74 kmph
  • Pitampura and Lodi Road: 59 kmph
  • Najafgarh: 56 kmph
  • IGNOU: 52 kmph
  • Pharma Science: 46 kmph
  • KV Narayana: 39 kmph

Delhi’s Safdarjung station also reported a squall. Rainfall totals by 8.30 am included:

  • Lodhi Road: 78 mm
  • Ridge: 59.2 mm
  • Ayanagar: 39.4 mm
  • Safdarjung: 7.7 cm

In just three hours, nearly 8 cm of rainfall was recorded. A sharp temperature dip was observed, dropping from 28C at 5 am to 19C by 5.30 am.

Waterlogging crippled movement in several areas, including Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, and Dwarka, adding to morning rush-hour woes.
